Talmadge "Tal" Charles Staggs

January 2, 1933 — December 28, 2020

Talmadge Charles Staggs, of Lindsay, was born on January 2, 1933 to John Howard Sr. and Flora (Cooper) Staggs. He passed away on Monday, December 28, 2020 in Oklahoma City after an extended illness. Tal was 87 years old.

On October 17, 1964, he and Maryland Stewart were united in marriage in Blanchard, Oklahoma. Together, they made their home and raised their family North of Lindsay. Tal and Maryland were married for 56 years at the time of his passing.
Tal was saved as a young man during a revival at the old Banner School. He was baptized in a pond and became a member of the Banner Baptist Church in 1957.
Tal attended Dibble School and graduated in 1953. Upon graduation, he was enlisted into the U. S. Army on July 13, 1953. He served his country well as an Artillery Cannoneer and was Honorable Discharged in 1955.
He later attended the Oklahoma State Barber College in Oklahoma City and obtained his barber license in 1956. Tal worked with various barbers in Lindsay throughout the years and many of these men became lifelong friends. His first job as a barber was with Porter Ivey on South Main Street. He worked in Bridwell’s Barber Shop with Bud Lindsey, Boyd English, and Charles Trammell. Tal worked a short period of time on an oil rig and at Burfords in Maysville, Oklahoma. In early 1970's, he opened his own shop on Broomcorn Street and barbered there until he moved his business to the corner of Hwy 19 and 4th Street in the late 1980's. He remained at this location until his retirement in 2015.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising animals, and gardening. Tal loved to plant and tend to big gardens, especially his prized tomato plants that he “babied”. He received a great fulfillment by planting seeds or young plants and watching them bring forth their fruits. Also, Tal had a love for early country music, bluegrass, and country gospel. He enjoyed going to Bluegrass Festivals and playing the mandolin with his friends. His favorite singer was Hank Williams Sr. He especially loved to hear his son Jeff play his guitar and daughter Deanna on the piano.
He liked watching professional football and baseball. But he later found an even greater enjoyment of football and baseball when his grandsons became old enough to play.

Tal is survived by his wife, Maryland, of the home; daughter Deanna and her husband Bryan Jensen of Maysville; son Jeff and his wife Tamitha Staggs of Moore; grandchildren, Bryce and his wife Haley Jensen; Seth Jensen, all of Maysville; Monica Staggs of Pennsylvania, Makenzie Staggs of Moore; great grandsons, Beau Ryan Jensen and soon to be born in April of 2021, Parker Lee Jensen. Tal is also survived by his brother, Raymond Staggs of Lindsay; sister, Lola Mottinger of Lindsay; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceeding Tal in death were his parents, John Howard Sr. and Flora Cooper Staggs; brothers, Troy Staggs, John Howard Staggs, Jr., and infant brother Donald Earl Staggs; and niece Jody Mottinger.

Masks and social distancing will be in place at the cemetery.
