James "Dub" William Cook

James "Dub" William Cook was born on June 28, 1928, in Story, Oklahoma to James Leonard Cook and Estelle (Putman) Cook. He passed away peacefully on June 7, 2026, in Norman, Oklahoma at the age of 97. Dub’s life was one marked by dedication, service, and a profound love of family.

Dub’s early years shaped a character of quiet strength and steadfast loyalty. He proudly served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, a chapter in his life that underscored his commitment to his country and instilled values that guided him throughout his lifetime. After his military service, he dedicated his professional career to American Airlines, where he worked as an operations agent. His meticulous nature and reliable presence were essential to his role, reflecting the conscientious person he was both at work and at home.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dub was a man of varied talents and passions. He was an avid gardener and took great pleasure in yard work. His enthusiasm for western films revealed a fondness for storytelling and the American West. Dub was also a skilled mechanic, possessing knowledge of both small and large engines, a testament to his practical intelligence and hands-on aptitude. Additionally, one of Dub’s greatest joys was flying Cessna aircraft.

Dub’s family life was rich and full. He married Billie Attebery in 1962, sadly she passed away on August 2, 1972. Dub remarried, he and Mary Jane were married on January 14, 1977. They were married for 47 years before her passing on January 14, 2024. Family was always important to Dub, he treasured the times spent together.

He is survived by: children: Tama "Missy" Fleming and husband Tim of Norman, Oklahoma, Sherry Miller of Arlington, Texas, Phillip Anderson and wife Donna of Bradley, Oklahoma, Danna Hobbs and husband Wade of Weatherford, Texas, and Les Brittian and wife Dee of Norman, Oklahoma; 16 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; nieces, Donna Wallace of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Phyllis White of Conroe, Texas; other great nieces and one great nephew; and very special friends, Carl Amos of Maysville, Oklahoma and Truman Earles of Purcell, Oklahoma. Dub also leaves behind many other friends and family members.

Dub is preceded in death by: parents, James Leonard Cook and Estelle Cook; wives, Billie (Attebery) Cook and Mary Jane Cook; brother, Harold Cook; sisters: Juanita Garrison and Luegene Merritt.

James Cook’s legacy is one of dedication, skill, and service. His contributions to his country, his profession, and his family endure as a testament to a life well-lived.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 12, 2026, at Winans Funeral Home in Maysville, Oklahoma. Burial at Maysville Cemetery under the direction of John W. Williams of Winans Funeral Home in Maysville, Oklahoma. Words of comfort may be sent to the family on this website.
