Doretha Koon

Doretha (Spencer) Koon passed from this world into the open and loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 6:59 PM on September 26, 2025, at Norman Regional Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was 85 years old.

Doretha was born at home in Garvin County on August 14, 1940 to Charlie and Lucy Spencer. She was the baby of 5 children. Doretha was raised there, attended Whitebead and Maysville Public Schools, graduating in 1958 from Maysville High School. She played basketball and was the only one in her senior class to play all 4 years of high school. She loved playing!

Doretha was a farm girl, working in the fields and riding horses. She had a gorgeous paint horse that she loved dearly…Scooter…and loved her kitty cats! She learned her great cooking and canning skills from her mother and since she was the baby she spent a lot of time with her mother and helping her in the kitchen.

Doretha left her home to go to work in Midwest City at Tinker AFB. It was there that she would meet the love of her life, Paul Koon. Paul was in the Air Force and got stationed at Tinker when while working on a plane one day he said he saw the most beautiful pair of legs walk by. That was the beginning of over 60 years together. After dating and Paul’s tour of duty took him to Germany for two years, the minute he returned home Paul asked Doretha to marry him. On October 10, 1965, they were married in Doretha’s sister Belle’s living room. They started their life together living in Del City, with Doretha still working at Tinker and Paul working at Aero Commander in Bethany, until Doretha was able to get him on at Tinker. Three years into marriage, Doretha gave birth to daughter Kathleen. Doretha quit Tinker to raise Kathleen and two years later their son Jason was born. It was in between the births that Doretha and Paul bought a house and 80 acres East of Lexington and would live there and raise their kids, and run a small cow/calf operation. When the kids were old enough to go to school, Doretha got on with Lexington Schools and worked there until Jason was a senior in high school and then she got back on at Tinker until she and Paul retired in 1997.

Their early retirement years were filled with trips, mostly to Colorado, and being together. Their later years were, unfortunately, filled with Doretha’s declining health.

Doretha was preceded in death by both her parents, Charlie and Lucy Spencer, her sisters Belle, Estel Lee, her brothers Glen and CE, and her son Jason.

Doretha is survived by her husband Paul, daughter Kathleen and son-n-law Jimmy Cannon, grandson Nollan Koon, granddaughter Emily Koon, and daughter-n-law Glennette Koon, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at Maysville Cemtery in Maysville, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of John W. Williams of Winans Funeral Home in Maysville, Oklahoma. Words of comfort may be sent to the family on this website.
