W. L. "Bud" Abernathy

January 3, 1921 — August 23, 2016

W. L. “Bud” Abernathy of Pauls Valley was born on January 3, 1921 in Maysville, Oklahoma to Morris Shelby Abernathy and Mary Emeline (Westfall) Abernathy. He passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at his home at the age of 95 years. Bud was a lifetime resident of Garvin County. He grew up in Maysville and married Estelle Elsie Cannon on May 18, 1940. In 1981 they moved to Pauls Valley. He was a self employed farmer who raised Champion Poland China Pigs with his partner, Harvey Richardson. He was a hard worker and enjoyed organizing the pig shows and showing the pigs. Bud was a dedicated caregiver to his wife, Estelle, until her death in 2010. He was known as the “Best Pickle Maker in the Country”. He was a member of the Pauls Valley Elks Lodge. Survivors include his nieces and nephews: Mac Carlton, Hal Carlton, Mona Smith, Betty Thack, Mary Ellen Goodwin, JoAnn Ivey, JoLee Roberts, Mary Scott, Jaton Soberquist, Wilburn Roberts, and Charles Womack. And a longtime good friend, Pat Childress. Bud was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle; an infant son, Williams Morris Abernathy and a stillborn son; brothers, Alvin Abernathy and Eber Abernathy; sisters, Vada Womack, Dozie Roberts, Lula Rene Carlton, Temple Richardson, and Sue Sharp; nieces and nephews, Tommie Womack, Jimmie Abernathy, Bill Roberts, Ida Lou Prather, and Ray Womack. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, August 29, 2016 at the Maysville Cemetery with Bro. Jim Womack officiating. Burial will be under the direction of John W. Williams of Winans Funeral Home, Maysville, OK. Words of comfort may be sent to the family at www.winansfuneralhome.com.
