Adelpha LaVerne Sykora

Adelpha LaVerne Sykora of Quitman, Texas, formerly of Maysville was born on December 28, 1918 in Ames, Oklahoma to Harry S. and Mabel (Root) Mallory. She passed from this life on Friday, June 24, 2016 in Tyler, Texas at the age of 97 years. Mrs. Sykora graduated from Southard High School and then received her Master’s Degree from East Central University. She married Velmer Otto Sykora on August 26, 1940. They moved from Southard, Oklahoma in 1953 to Maysville, where she lived until 2012, when she moved to Quitman, Texas to live by her son, Rodger. Mrs. Sykora was an educator in the Maysville Public Schools for 26 years, where she was an outstanding grade school teacher and loved by all of her fellow teachers and the many students that she taught. She loved being with her grandchildren. Mrs. Sykora enjoyed teaching, sewing, yard work, baking, and spending time with her friends, especially Mrs. Reva Melton, who was her lifelong teaching buddy and where you would see one, you would see the other one. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and she will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. Her survivors include her son, Rodger Sykora of Quitman, Texas. A brother, Perry Mallory of Sand Springs, OK and sister, Marylin DeMoss and husband Dean of Aledo, Texas. Grandchildren: Randy Sykora of Lafayette, Louisiana and Vickie Lutz of Neveda, Texas. Great grandchildren: Brey Sykora, Sara Brown, Gabe Lutz, and Abigail Lutz and great-great grandchildren: Hoyet Brown, Easton Brown, and Blake Sykora. And numerous nieces and nephews and a host of former students. Mrs. Sykora was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Mabel Mallory, and her husband, Velmer Sykora. Visitation for family and friends will be from 5 to 7 pm, Thursday, June 30, 2016 at Winans Funeral Home, 405 Sixth Street, Maysville, OK. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, July 1, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church, Maysville with Bro. Mike Deviney officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 pm at the Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta, OK under the direction of John W. Williams of Winans Funeral Home, Maysville, OK.
