Roy Richard Gower, Sr.

Roy Richard Gower, Sr. of Maysville was born on March 15, 1930 in Maysville, Oklahoma to Samuel and Leon (Riddle) Gower. He passed from this life on January 30, 2015 at his home in Maysville, Oklahoma at the age of 84 years. Roy Gower lived in this area during his school years and in 1948 joined the United States Navy. He made the Navy his career and retired in 1973, as an E-9 Master Chief-Hull technician working in fire safety and ship repair and serving as a training administrator in these vitally important areas. He taught ship repair and was a ship fitter and served as a superintendent of fire schools in San Francisco and Japan. His Naval career spanned the Korean War and the Vietnam War. On February 6, 1953 in Maysville, Oklahoma he was married to Quanah Staley, the daughter of a well known Maysville family, at the First Baptist Church parsonage by Rev. Wendell Hart. After retirement the family moved back to Maysville in 1973. Roy enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an expert marksman with a sling shot. He enjoyed his “man cave”, reloading his shotgun shells, gardening and helping Quanah in the canning end of the gardening and visiting at the coffee shop. Quanah, Linda, and he also delivered the Pauls Valley Democrat to rural Garvin County and Maysville homes. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Maysville, being saved and baptized during the ministry of Rev. Ralph Chapman. Survivors: His wife Quanah of the home. 1 Son: Rick Gower and wife Donna of Norman, Oklahoma 1 Daughter: Linda-Michelle Gower Philpott of Maysville. 1 Sister: Ginny Kovacs of Dallas, Texas 6 Grandchildren: Josh Gower and wife Heather; Katie Cooper and husband Luke; Jacob and Kylie Gower; Annalee Gilmore and husband John; and Jonathan Philpott and wife Lydia. Step-Grandchildren: Robert Miles and Lauren Brown. 2 Great-Grandchildren: McKenna Cooper and Adrianna Fay Philpott. 1 Great-Grandchild coming in March. 1 Step-Great Grandchild: Isabella Brown 1 Pet Cat–Tiger of the home. Roy is preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Leon Gower; brothers: Harvey, Deb, and Sam Gower, and 1 sister Ola Belle Bennett. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 2, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the Winans Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Billy Davenport officiating. Burial will be in the Maysville Cemetery under the direction of John W. Williams of Winans Funeral Home, Maysville. Condolences may be left for the family at www.winansfuneralhome.com.
