Gertie Mae Brooks of Lexington passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2012 at Lexington, Oklahoma at the age of 89 years. She was born on November 4, 1923 in Blanton View to Joseph and Paralee (Segroves) Wigley. Gertie lived all of her life in the Maysville and Purcell areas. She attended school at Wayne and Maysville, where she graduated in 1942. Gertie was very proud to be an accomplished basketball player for both Wayne and Maysville High Schools. In 1940-41 the Maysville basketball team had 8 consecutive victories, and Gertie was a real asset to her team scoring 52 points in one of those games. She married Marvin H. “Mutt” Brooks on May 1, 1943 in Purcell. They lived in North Carolina and Florida while her husband was in the Army. Gertie and Mutt owned and operated a grocery store in Rosedale. She worked at Sherry Classics in Purcell and as a clothing coordinator at the Pauls Valley State School until her retirement in 1985. Before going to live at the Lexington Nursing Home, she made her home with her daughter, Cathy. She was a member of the Maysville Church of Christ. Gertie will be dearly missed by family and friends. Survivors include her daughter, Cathy Lauderdale of Paoli. A son, Mike Brooks and wife Sonya of Maysville. Brothers: Pat Wigley of Lindsay and Roy Wigley of Ponca City. Grandchildren: Camille Warren and husband Kevin; Cliff Lauderdale and wife Danna; Shelby Dutton and husband Randy; Amy Seals; Kecia Burrows and husband Doug; Taima Beam and husband Paul; and Trenton Brooks and wife Kelsey. 18 great grandchildren. And many other relatives and friends. Gertie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Marvin H. Brooks in 1986; son, Marvin Dale Brooks; son-in-law, Lawrence Lauderdale; brother, Leo Wigley; sisters: Dorothy Gibson, Opal Raleigh, Emma McCoy, and Bessie Powell. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, December 27, 2012 at Winans Funeral Home Chapel, Maysville with Rev. Paul Beam officiating. Burial will be in the Paoli Cemetery under the direction of John Williams of Winans Funeral Home, Maysville. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.winansfuneralhome.com
